Kitesurfing in Sardinia: the 5 best kite spots in Sardinia

Below we will see some of the 5 best kite beaches in Sardinia where to kitesurf.

In Sardinia there are several spots for kitesurfing in which to find great wind. good air and water temperatures, quiet and uncrowded beaches for most of the year. All this makes Sardinia one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Europe.

Kitesurfing in Sardinia: the wind and the temperatures

The Wind in Sardinia

Although the wind is not always easy to predict, Sardinia offers ideal conditions for kitesurfing. Normally the wind is more reliable and more stable in the south than in the north of the island.

In the south of Sardinia you can kite with the wind of sirocco, which blows from the south-east, with the thermal winds whose direction changes according to the kite spot and with the Mistral winds, which blow from the north-east. In the south of Sardinia, these winds are more constant than in the north and make this part of the island more suitable for kitesurfing than in the north. Indeed, the southeast coast from Villasimius to Funtanamare is one of the most windy places in Europe. Good music for the kitesurfers!

The kite beaches of the Northern Sardinia are better with Mistral and generally with the winds that blow from the North. Here in the north Sardinia, because of nearby Corsica, the winds are often very gusty.

The temperatures in Sardinia

During the summer months the water temperatures are pleasant and hover around 20 to 25 degrees. The water temperature in the winter season is about 15 degrees. Air temperatures are slightly colder in the north than in the South of Sardinia.

The boom of Kitesurfing in Sardinia

Thanks to the various competitions that took place in the famous Porto Pollo over the past decades, Sardinia was already starting with a good sailing pedigree. But in recent years kitesurfing has really taken off, especially in the south of the island thanks, above all, to the stability of the winds and mild temperatures. This is why more and more kiters are choosing the south of the island for their kitesurfing holidays in Sardinia.

Even the warmer water and air temperatures of the south make more attractive this part of the island. And the fact that the cost of accommodations and living are also generally lower in the south than in the north, make it definitely a very popular choice for kitesurfing in Sardinia. In any case, we would like to underline how, in the right conditions, even some of the kite spots of northern Sardinia can be superb.

The 5 best kite spots in Southern Sardinia

Punta Trettu

Punta Trettu, The Beast Kite Spot in Sardinia and Europe
Punta Trettu Kite Beach in Sardinia

Punta Trettu is considered by many to be the best kite spot in Sardinia, and one of the main destinations for kitesurfing in Europe.

The kite spot of Punta Tretu, considered as a lagoon, is located in the south-west of Sardinia, has flat waters and shallow waters, and steady winds. In short, it is a paradise for kitesurfing, with perfect conditions for kitesurfing, especially when the sirocco and mistral winds blow.

Punta Trettu is perfect for beginners, with shallow waters perfect for learning the kite basics, in particular because there are very few swimmers. In Punta Trettu there are two zones dedicated to kitesurfing, one dedicated to kite schools and one dedicated to free-riders. There are also some areas that are prohibited to kitesurf, so you need to inquire and pay attention to areas where kitesurfing is not possible (if you do kite in the forbidden zones, you can incur a fine).

Punta Trettu is a must for all kitesurfers, to be visited absolutely during a kitesurfing holiday in Sardinia, especially for those who want to quickly learn kitesurfing.

In Punta Trettu there are several kite schools. One of the most equipped and pleasant centres is the Punta Trettu Kite Centre of KiteGeneration.

Porto Botte

Porto Botte is a bay of about 2 kilometers in southern Sardinia. With winds blowing from the north-west it is one of the best Kite spots in Sardinia. It is a good choice for both beginners and free-riders.

Cagliari and Poetto beach

Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a fantastic city to visit. Combining historic buildings and avenues, lined with cafés and restaurants, with a lively nightlife and Poetto beach, what more can you ask for?
The Poetto beach, located few kilometres from the city, is one of the meeting places for people, especially with the good weather. Poetto beach is a Winter Kite Spot, since in the summer it is too crowded and not possible to kitesurf.
With strong sirocco, Levante and thermal winds, Poetto beach can create spectacular conditions for kitesurfing. The sandy bottom makes it safe for also beginners, when the wind isn’t too strong.

Petrol Beach (La Maddalena Beach)

In the period from April to September, on the La Maddalena Spiaggia, better known as Petrol beach, on sunny days with no global winds, a beautiful thermal wind blows, warm and constant. With three kilometers of sand, with clear and clean waters, this beach is a perfect place for kitesurfing.
On the best days, the thermal wind at Petrol Beach can blow between 15 and 20 knots.

Porto Pollo

Until recently, Porto Pollo was perhaps the best known spot for kitesurfing. Although now Punta Trettu is the most popular destination for kitesurfing, Porto Pollo always has its charm. Punta Trettu has taken over Porto Pollo as the wind is often gusty here and is less reliable. In Porto Pollo, being in the North of Sardinia, the air and water temperatures are a bit colder than the south of the island (in Porto Pollo wearing a wetsuit is practically always required).
